This program uses applied research approaches to improve the health and productivity of managed alfalfa leafcutting bees. Through laboratory and field studies, we investigate major pests and parasites, evaluate safer and more effective control methods, and translate our findings into practical tools for Canadian ALB producers.

02 Research Project: Developing a scoring system for evaluating pollinator habitat initiatives
This project is developing a practical, science-based scoring system to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of pollinator habitat initiatives. The tool will help land managers, communities, and other practitioners measure outcomes, identify opportunities for improvement, and make evidence-based decisions that better support diverse pollinator communities.
03 Conservation Tool: Pollipro Pollinator Identification App
PolliPro is a user-friendly web application that helps people recognize and record pollinators in the field using visible characteristics. Currently in the Beta testing phase, it is designed to make identification and monitoring more accessible, it supports standardized observations, builds identification skills, and helps land managers, practitioners, and community scientists better understand local pollinator communities.

04 Ongoing Research
WIld pollinator diversity and monitoring
Our team has collected biodiversity data and identified thousands of native bee species on both the east and west coasts of Canada. In Montreal, we work with the taxonomists at the Institut de Recherche en Biologie Vegetale at the University of Montreal, and the Montreal Insectarium to categorize bee diversity across Canada. We are happy to contribute our data to provincial and national bee monitoring initiatives.
